چکیده

Audio information stored in the undulations of a groove in a mechanical sound carrier such as a cylinder or disc phonograph record may be reconstructed, without contact, by measuring the groove shape using precision optical metrology methods and digital image-processing. The viability of this approach was recently demonstrated on a 78r.p.m. shellac disc using two-dimensional image acquisition and analysis methods. The present work reports the first three-dimensional reconstruction of recorded sound from a mechanical carrier. The source material, a celluloid cylinder, was scanned using colorcoded confocal microscopy techniques and resulted in a faithful playback of the recorded information.

Reproduction of sinusoidal signals from cylinder recordings measured via non-contact methods

A non-contact method of sound reproduction has great potential for sound archives, aiming to transfer the audio content from early sound recordings such as wax cylinders, which may otherwise be ‘unplayable’ via conventional stylus methods. If non-contact, optical methods are to be considered a viable solution for sound archives, a method for quantifying the quality of the reproduced audio signa...

Optical and Surface Metrology to Study Cultural Heritage: Confocal Topometry Applied to the Surface Study of Photographic Images

Optical and surface metrologies provide non-perturbing (non-contact, non-invasive and non-destructive) instrumental techniques that are amenable and well suited to in situ surface studies of objects of cultural heritage such as original historical and fine art photographs. These innovative non-perturbing topometric technologies provide three dimensional data of the object’s surface. They also o...

Analysis of Frequency Leakage in Different Optical Paths of Nano-Metrology Systems Based on Frequency-Path Models

The drawing of frequency-path (F-P) models of optical beams is an approach for nonlinearity analysis in nano-metrology systems and sensors based on the laser interferometers. In this paper, the frequency-path models of four nano-metrology laser interferometry systems are designed, analyzed and simulated, including ...

Infrared Holography for Wavefront Reconstruction and Interferometric Metrology

Long wavelength interferometry has been widely applied in different fields, such as infrared optics, infrared transmitting materials, high-reflective multilayer dielectric coatings for highpower laser systems. In optical metrology, long-wave interferometers are also employed for shape measurement of reflective rough surfaces and for testing optical systems that requires deep aspherics. An advan...

Meshing Error of elliptic cylinder gear based on tooth contact analysis

In order to study the dynamic meshing characteristics of the elliptic cylinder gear and obtain the meshing error of the gear transmission system, the two-dimensional static contact analysis of the gear tooth surface is carried out by using ANSYS software, and the key parts of the contact area of the tooth surface are determined. Then, the dynamic meshing model of the elliptic cylinder gear is e...
